Times of India reports new law brings more compassion into scientific research

The Times of India reports a new law which brings more compassion into scientific research:

MUMBAI: The Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) has banned the use of live animals in dissection and other experiments in educational and research institutions. But scientists conducting new molecular research will be exempted from the ban. Based on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1960), the MoEF has issued guidelines to the University Grants Commission, ministry of health and family welfare, Pharmacy Council of India and the Medical Council of India to discontinue dissection and experiments with live animals in universities, colleges, research institutes, hospitals, laboratories and instead use alternatives like computer simulation.

People often ask how I became a healthcare lawyer. One answer is that I came via bioethics. I taught healthcare law and bioethics and began to see connections between our medical ethics and notions of compassion taught in Buddhism and other religious traditions. Ultimately this led to publishing an article entitled, Towards a Bioethics of Compassion and then several books on the intersection of legal rules and complementary and integrative medicine. Our consciousness toward animal suffering is part of the evolution toward greater awareness. This understanding is a great impetus behind my healthcare law practice. Our law practice includes legal issues relevant to clinical research and integrative medicine. Contact us for a consultation.
