California Medical Board details language used in disciplinary investigations of physicians

The California Medical Board, in its recent newsletter, provides an explanation of language it uses in disciplinary investigations and enforcement actions against physicians:

This is useful – but more helpful is legal advice to avoid medical board discipline, psychology board discipline, nutritional board discipline, or investigation and discipline by another health care regulatory board. Increasingly, boards of medicine, psychology, dietetics and nutrition, social work, as well as medicine, are investigating practitioners for all sorts of violations. In the old days, it was simply the medical board coming after a medical doctor for negligence or gross negligence. Now investigations can include individuals who are holistic health practitioners (for example, practicing Reiki) who happen to include nutritional advice in their practice. It is critical to understand local laws defining various regulated healthcare practices and to understand how to handle a Board investigation so as to minimize further legal exposure.
