How Long Do NPs Have to Practice Under a Physician Before Gaining Independence?

Unfortunately, what you’re going to have to do as an NP in California is you’ll have to be a 103 category nurse for three years before you become the 104 category where you can practice in your own practice. So we weren’t sure how the Board was going to deal with that. They are now saying specifically that this 104 category nurse, practicing in their own practice, isn’t available until 2026. So they don’t even have an application ready for that, and they don’t plan to release one until 2026.
